Schools Closing for G8 Summit
FCPS Announces Last School Day

Frederick, MD (April 12, 2012) –  Frederick County public schools will be closed for students Friday, May 18 when the United States will host the Group of Eight (G8) world leaders at Camp David in Thurmont.  Sheriff Chuck Jenkins has advised FCPS that he anticipates traffic congestion and the potential for security concerns as participating world leaders, the news media and their staffs travel through the county.  The Sheriff recommended that schools be cancelled for students that day.  Activities such as Advanced Placement testing, athletics, drama productions and proms will go on as scheduled May 18-19, while field trips, assemblies and the similar school-day activities will be rescheduled or cancelled. School administrators will notify participating students and families about any modifications regarding scheduled activities.  FCPS is working closely with the Sheriff’s Office, providing detailed information about scheduled events and related logistics. Parents and guardians concerned about safety have the right to keep their children at home.
FCPS will provide bus transportation on May 18 to students who attend non-FCPS schools and normally receive this transportation.
Although students will not attend school on May 18, it is a work day for staff.  Administrators and supervisors will provide further information to employees.
The Maryland State Department of Education has granted FCPS a waiver so that students do not need to make up the day. The last day of the school year for students is Friday, June 8, with a two-hour early dismissal.  The last day for teachers is Monday, June 11.
